Demand Response

Edited

During peak demand in summer, utilities pays businesses to temporarily reduce energy use in an effort to reduce strain on the grid and ensure everyone has safe, reliable power when they need it most.

Who can participate?

Today, David Energy offers this service to ConEd customers.

Typically, utilities have have annual load (or total usage) threshold requirements, meaning it has traditionally been reserved for commercial or enterprise customers.customers.

David Energy enables businesses who do and do not need those thresholds to participate by aggregating load into a joint portfolio. Earnings paid by the utility are shared with customers based on their participation and impact.

How does it work?

As a David Energy customer, we make it easy and seamless.

  1. Contract: To participate, eligible customers must sign a Grid Services contract to allow David Energy to review and consider their utility accounts for enrollment.

  2. Enrollment: If customers meet eligibility requirements, their accounts will be automatically enrolled in these exclusive programs.

  3. Events: The utility will call for an event during periods when there is high demand, capacity shortages, or system emergencies. Each season, we typically see between 5-10 total events, which last between 2-6 hours.

  4. Notifications: Customers will be notified within 24 hours of an event.

  5. Response Action: Connected thermostats will be automatically adjusted to temporary settings to reduce usage during called events.

    • Customers can "opt out" by changing the temperature on the thermostat at any time, if needed. Keep in mind that opt outs impact performance and value realization.

  6. Participation: Participation is measured by total participating minutes / total event minutes. A participating minute is time when our temporary settings were in place and not removed.

    • Opt-outs will "stop the clock" when the onsite change is made. Only previously uninterrupted minutes when our temporary settings were in place will be measured for incentive payments.

  7. Incentives: Participation over the course of the season will be factored into the amount of value gained for the customer.

  8. Results: Final results are sent from ConEd to David Energy in January of the following year.

  9. Payments: Customers can expect payment or savings statements from David Energy by March of the following year.
