What is a meter multiplier change, and what does it mean for me?

Edited

A meter multiplier is the basic measurement unit for an electric meter. For commercial and industrial facilities, electricity usage often exceeds what a meter can display. In these cases, the meter records a fraction of the actual usage, and then applies a multiplier to calculate the total. If this multiplier changes, it could indicate a billing error, or simply that your meter has been replaced.

If you’d like to confirm the reason for the change, you can request a meter check from your utility:

  • Gather your account information, including your account number and service address

  • Call your utility's customer service number (usually found on your bill or their website)

  • Select the option for reporting technical issues or meter problems

  • Explain to the representative that a meter multiplier change was detected on your account

  • Request an explanation, or a meter check

After reporting the issue:

  • Record the date of your call and any reference number provided

  • Keep monitoring your bills for any unusual charges or adjustments
